LHISD Board Considers Additional School Safety Support Option

Posted Date: 07/20/26 (10:46 PM)

Policy updateAt the July 20, 2026 regular board meeting, the LHISD Board of Trustees approved an update to Board Policy CKE (LOCAL) after receiving a presentation about an opportunity to proactively expand the district’s school safety resources. This update will allow for the potential addition of a school marshal/guardian program in the future.

This discussion reflects LHISD’s continued commitment to evaluating and strengthening safety practices as the district grows. The policy update would provide the district with an additional tool to support campus safety needs; however, no decision has been made to immediately implement a school marshal/guardian program.

In 2019, LHISD established its own police department ahead of state requirements, demonstrating the district’s commitment to proactive safety planning. Since that time, LHISD has experienced significant growth, increasing from approximately 4,500 students to 10,500 students in 2026. Today, the LHISD Police Department includes a chief of police, sergeants, licensed police officers, and administrative support staff who work daily to protect students, staff, and campuses.

LHISD continually evaluates ways to support its police department and maintain a strong safety presence. A school marshal/guardian position, if implemented, would not replace LHISD police officers. Instead, it would serve as an additional support option during officer absences, staffing transitions, or other situations where temporary support may be needed.

Any future implementation would involve a thorough selection and vetting process. Candidates would be required to meet state requirements, complete extensive required training, and meet the same high standards of professionalism and accountability expected of all individuals serving LHISD students.

Updating Policy CKE (LOCAL) simply allows LHISD to remain proactive and prepared. LHISD remains committed to continuously reviewing opportunities that enhance the safety and security of every student and staff member.
